Oh, Freedom! Quilting Project

Creating community quilts to commemorate and memorialize the people and places in the Hudson Valley who were important in the historic fight for freedom and emancipation.

We learn together…

about the little-known history of the antislavery movement, the Underground Railroad, and role of enslaved people in building the economy and culture of the Hudson Valley

We create together

textile art that will be exhibited throughout the region and will support ongoing learning and reflection on this important part of our history.

We collaborate with

organizations throughout the region to use the textile arts to support ongoing learning and reflection on this important part of our history.

The Oh, Freedom! Quilting Project collaborates with organizations throughout the region including Celebrating the African Spirit, the Putnam History Museum, Oakwood Friends School, Quilt-N-Queens, the First Congregational Church-UCC-Poughkeepsie, and the Sadie Peterson Delaney Branch of the Poughkeepsie Public Library.

The Project is supported in part by the Good Neighbors Program of Vassar College
and the Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley.
